DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
This work involves responsibility for the condition of a school building or an assigned section of a large building. Work includes, besides routine cleaning activities, semi-skilled repair and maintenance tasks. A custodian may supervise the work of one or more assistant custodians and cleaners, and assume responsibility for their work. The Custodian is directly responsible to the Building Principal and then Custodial Foreperson and Senior Custodian, should there be one at that building. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)
Inspects buildings, grounds and equipment for safety and cleanliness;
Checks fire system and maintains all fire safety procedures;
Sweeps and mops floors and washes walls, dusts and performs other cleaning duties;
Empties waste baskets, and disposes of rubbish;
Replaces light bulbs, towels, soap and other supplies as needed;
Cuts grass, trims shrubbery, rakes leaves and generally maintains grounds;
Oversees and participates in operation of heating and ventilating system;
Removes snow and ice from walks;
Makes minor repairs to buildings, building equipment and furniture;
Checks operation of bells and clocks;
Performs a variety of routine and special building, cleaning and maintenance tasks.
Receives and handles complaints and a variety of special requests from principals and teachers; Requisitions equipment and supplies;
Keeps records and makes reports of supplies used and activities completed;
Alerts Building Principal and then Custodial Foreperson and Senior Custodian of specific problems of an unusual nature requiring attention;
Recommends improved practices and policies to Senior Custodian and Custodial Foreperson or Building Principal;
Provides ongoing inspection of the building to insure proper maintenance, operation and efficiency; Alerts Building Principal as to negative conditions found during building inspections allowing them to prepare appropriate work requisitions to remedy any adverse building conditions;
May assign Assistant Custodians and Cleaners to various tasks if there is no Senior Custodian assigned to that building;
Performs other related duties which may be assigned by the Superintendent of Schools or his/her designee.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Thorough knowledge of building cleaning practices, supplies and equipment; good knowledge of the operation and maintenance of steam boiler equipment, ventilation, and A/C units; ability to work independently; ability to maintain effective relationships with employees; ability to understand and follow directions; thoroughness; dependability; mental alertness; dependability, initiative; neatness; courtesy; honesty; good physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
For Promotional Purposes: Candidates must have continuous permanent competitive status for a period of twelve (12) months as an Assistant Custodian for any agency under the Utica Municipal Civil Service Commission..
For Open Competitive Purposes: Two years of experience in building cleaning operation and maintenance work; or an equivalent combination of experience and training.
Requirements per Civil Service: Interested individuals from City of Utica Civil Services Eligibility List must return canvass letter to Civil Service, per canvass letter's instructions.
