DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
The Transportation Dispatcher helps ensure the proper functioning of District transportation operations by assuring that all bus routes are staffed and that daily operations run efficiently and with minimal disruption. Under the general supervision of the Transportation Supervisor, performs duties related to the dispatching of drivers and vehicles to be used in transportation of pupils. The incumbent is responsible for ensuring that all School District buses are staffed with drivers following established routes and prepared time schedules. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative Only)
Dispatch all School Bus Drivers to a proper vehicle for their assigned route;
Reviews the proper route with Bus Drivers;
Stays in communication with all Bus Drivers by means of two-way radio equipment;
Informs maintenance staff of breakdowns and other mechanical problems;
Accepts and verifies orders for and schedules field trips and other school activities;
Informs new drivers of department rules and regulations;
Reviews drivers’ daily trip sheets for various information, such as overload, time discrepancies, student accidents and general notes from drivers;
Make sure accident reports are completed;
Documents and posts monthly overtime list;
Operates a school bus to transport students;
Check vehicles for cleanliness; completes daily report on vehicle inspection;
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES and PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Thorough knowledge of transportation procedures and the operation and maintenance of school buses; thorough knowledge of driving safety practices and traffic law and regulations pertaining to school bus operation; thorough knowledge of the geography of the district; thorough knowledge of the District operational procedures; the ability to use two-way radio equipment; ability to operate a school bus; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to get along well with children and command their respect; mechanical aptitude; good judgment; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, INCLUDING SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Graduation form High School or possession of a High School Equivalency Diploma and five (5) years of experience in dispatching, scheduling, transportation or fleet operations.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid NYS Commercial Drivers License with the appropriate “S” endorsement at the time of appointment. A valid NYS Commercial Drivers License must be maintained throughout employment.
NOTE: In addition, candidates may be required to complete or present proof indicating completion of basic first aid and CPR courses.
Any position involving contact with children/students will require a background and fingerprinting check before employment commences.
Per Chapter 180 of the Laws of 2000, and by Regulations of the Commissioner of Education, to be employed in a position designated by a school district or BOCES as involving direct contact with students, a clearance for employment from the State Education Department is required.
